Meaning & History

Taken from the Venezuelan Spanish title of the Virgin Mary Nuestra Señora de Coromoto, meaning "Our Lady of Coromoto," the name taken from the cacique (chief) of a local Indian tribe, known as the Cosmes, who, legend says, twice witnessed the Virgin Mary.
Our Lady of Coromoto is regarded as the patron saint of Venezuela, similar to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico and Our Lady of Luján in Argentina. For this reason the name is most common in Venezuela but it also has some use in other Spanish-speaking countries.
