Meaning & History

Derived from an expression of sadness intended to mean "pity!" or "alas!" in Kazakh. The word itself is either of Arabic origin from a word meaning "pity, regret, surprise" or from a Persian expression meaning "beautiful". It was traditionally given to girls when her parents were expecting a son (used in the context of "what a pity that it was not a boy").
