The Diego's origin is from Didacus and not from Santiago. In Spanish the two names are separated with different traditions. Santiago has these other forms in Spanish: Jaime, Jaimito, Jacobo, Yago, Iago, Santi.
Its variant Didac or Dídac is common in Catalonia. [noted -ed]
This isn't even a name, nor was it ever a name. Diego derives from Santiago (St. James), not from "Didacus".
