Meaning & History

Derived from Greek Διός (Dios) meaning "of Zeus" combined with the Greek adjective γνητός (gnetos) meaning "born". The latter word is ultimately derived from the Greek verb γίγνομαι (gignomai) meaning "to come into being, to be born". Also compare the related names Diogenes and Diognis.

This name was borne by two Olympic victors; one lived in the 6th century BC and the other in the 5th century BC.
