Derived from Greek ἐρατός (eratos) "(the) lovely, beloved" (see also Erato) combined with Greek σθενος (sthenos) "vigour, strength." This name was borne by Eratosthenes of Cyrene, an ancient Greek scientist from the 3rd century BC who founded geography and measured the circumference of the earth.
