Meaning & History

Alteration of Eryxo used by Plutarch in his essay Virtues of Women, perhaps formed using the Greek element ξενος (xenos) "foreigner, guest". Eryxene or Erissena was later used for a character in Johann Adolf Hasse's Italian-language opera Cleofide (1731).
