From a combination of the characters 伏 (fu, meaning “to lie prostrate”) and 羲 (xi, referring to the god himself). Fuxi is the twin brother and husband of NÜWA, one of the ancestors of humankind. He is an important culture hero credited with devising the eight trigrams used for divination, as well as teaching humanity how to fish, hunt and make music.
