Meaning & History

Of uncertain etymology. Most likely derived from the name of a Baltic tribe, the Galindians, which were native to Lithuania in the 1200s. Linguistically this name may have origins from either the Baltic word galas ("the end", probably synonymous to "located farthest", "located near the border of the territory or area"), or from the Lithuanian gilus – “deep”, and gelmė meaning “depth.”
