Meaning & History

This name is best known for being the name of the Georgian martyr and saint Gobron (died in 914 AD). He was a Georgian nobleman and military commander, who was beheaded by muslim Arabs for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. Shortly after his death, he was canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church under the name Mikael. Some sources state that this or Mikel was his original name, thereby indicating that Gobron was actually a nickname.

According to Georgian sources, the etymology of the name Gobron is unknown. A Russian source claims that the name is a derivative of Gabriel, but this might possibly be solely based on the visual similarity between the two names. There are also several Russian sources that claim that Gobron is ultimately derived from an Arabic word that means "brave, courageous", but all of those sources seem rather questionable.
