Scripts Γόργιππος(Ancient Greek)

Meaning & History

The first element of this name is derived from either the Greek adjective γοργός (gorgos) meaning "grim, fierce, terrible" or the Greek verb γοργεύω (gorgeuo) meaning "to move rapidly, to hasten". Also compare the Greek verb γοργόομαι (gorgoomai) meaning "to be spirited". The second element of this name is derived from the Greek noun ἵππος (hippos) meaning "horse". As such, the name refers to either a fierce horse or a fast horse.

Gorgippos was the name of a Spartocid king of the Bosporus (4th century BC).
