Meaning & History

Possibly from Old Norse guð "god" (cognate with Old High German, Old Dutch got) and sveinn "boy". Alternatively it may be derived from a medieval Dutch form of Goswin, as borne by Gozewijn Comhaer, a Dutch clergyman who served as Bishop of Skálholt in Iceland from 1437 until his death in 1447.
