Meaning & History

Old Norse name which probably meant "high stone", from Old Norse hár "high" and steinn "stone". Alternatively the first element may be derived from Primitive Scandinavian *hanhista "horse" or Primitive Scandinavian *haþu "battle". This was the name of a 9th-century Viking chieftain.
