Meaning & History

The first element of this name is derived from the Greek noun ἥγησις (hegesis) meaning "command". This word is ultimately derived from the Greek verb ἡγέομαι (hegeomai) meaning "to go before, to lead (the way)" as well as "to guide", which is closely related to the Greek verb ἄγω (ago) meaning "to lead, to guide" as well as "to bring, to carry". The second element of this name is derived from the Greek noun πύλη (pyle) meaning "gate, entrance".

This was the name of a Thracian princess who married the Athenian statesman and general Miltiades around 515-513 BC.
