Medieval French form of Odierne, an Old French form of Audigerna, with the spelling altered under influence by Latin hodierna "of today, present-day, existing now". For a cognate perhaps not so influenced, cf. the Provençal Audierna.The name was relatively popular, being common enough to beget a matronymic English surname still extant today: Odiorne.Hodierna or Hodierne of Jerusalem (1110–1164) was the third of four daughters born to Baldwin II, King of Jerusalem (~1075–1131) and Morphia of Melitene (d. ~1126/27). Hodierna's oldest sister was Melisende (1105–1161), Queen-regnant (1131–1153) and regent (1153–1161) of Jerusalem during its Crusader-state era. Hodierna herself became Countess-consort of Tripoli (1137–1152) via her marriage to Raymond II, Count of Tripoli (1116–1152); after her husband was assassinated, Hodierna ruled Tripoli as regent (1152–1155) for her and Raymond's son, Raymond III (1140–1187).
