Meaning & History

Derived from Old Norse hrafn "raven" and fífa "cotton grass" (used in poetry to mean "arrow"; also compare Fífa).

A similar word, hrafnafífa, is the Icelandic name for a type of plant known as Scheuchzer's cottongrass in English (species Eriophorum scheuchzeri).
