Derived from the Greek verb ὑπερέχω (hyperecho) meaning "to be above, to rise over the horizon" as well as "to excel, to outdo".

Also compare the Greek verb ὑπερηχέω (hyperecheo) meaning "to outroar, to drown out (of sound and noise)".

This name was borne by two saints, one of whom was a Desert Father who lived in the 4th or 5th century AD.
