Meaning & History
Probably derived from Ancient Greek ὑπέρ (hyper) meaning "over, above" and ἵππος (hippos) meaning "horse". This was the name of several characters in Greek mythology, including one of the Daenids (who killed her husband Hippocorystes on their wedding night), and a princess of Molossia who was turned into a diving bird (a shearwater or loon) by Zeus as she dove into water to escape her burning home.
