Meaning & History

Derived from Greek ἥλιος (helios) meaning "sun" and the verb stalazo meaning "to drip down slowly", taken from a word used in the Greek Orthodox religion to describe God's throne. The word ἡλιοστάλακτος (heliostalaktos) is used in Greek texts to describe the Dormition of the Mother of God (which corresponds to the Assumption in the Western Church). For this reason, the name day for Iliostalakti in the Orthodox liturgical calendar is August 15 - the Feast of the Dormition.
