The most famous bearer of this name is probably Ilmari Juutilainen, a Finnish ace pilot from the Winter War and Continuation War. He's the top-scoring non-German fighter pilot of all time.
You'd have to be insane and foolhardy to name your son this in Finland today. The name is associated with old men, and it sounds hopelessly dated and even quite geeky. This reminds me of being in elementary school, when we had a substitute teacher and we decided to come up with fake names and write them on name tags. Of course, one of the guys was Ilmari. And of course the substitute teacher wasn't fooled.
It's an old name. Originated from word 'ilma' which means air in English. Ilmarinen is mentioned in Mikael Agricola's 'Psalttari' in 1551 to be an heathen god from Häme.
