Pronounced Pron. [JA-ba]  [key·simplify]
Other Forms FormsJapa (जप) — Classical Sanskrit form meaning "hibiscus" or "chant" (prayer repetition) Jaba Bala (জবা বালা) — older compound form meaning "girl like the hibiscus" Jabamala (जपमाला) — not exactly a name but refers to a "garland of prayers" or a "prayer rosary," connecting to the flower's sacred use.

Meaning & History

The name Jaba (জবা) is of Bengali origin, directly referring to the hibiscus flower, which is common and culturally significant in Bengal.
It traces back to the Sanskrit word Japa (जप), meaning "hibiscus" or "prayer," because the bright red hibiscus is often offered in prayers to deities like Kali and Durga.

Over time, Jaba became a poetic name for girls, representing "vivid beauty," "vitality," and "spiritual offering." In literature and songs, the hibiscus often symbolizes intense, bold beauty and fierce devotion.
