The meaning of Jagdish as 'World Ruler' is not appropriate.
The name is composed of two words 'Jagat' & 'Ish' which after Sanskrit rules of sandhi (conjugation of two words into one) becomes Jagdish.
Jagat means 'The World'
Ish means 'God'
Direct translation is not possible. Here Jagat emphasize 'Everything' so the proper translation is 'Supreme God' or 'God of Everything'.
I *heart* this name very much and plan to use it for one of my characters. In the episode of "Seinfeld" where they go to India, Elaine gets drunk and tells Jerry that his Indian name is "Jagdish."
This name has the same meaning as the Scottish/Irish name Donald. I think that's a cool coincidence.
