Meaning unknown, although it is likely taken from Spanish jarifa meaning "healthy; attractive", which is ultimately derived from Classical Arabic šarīf "noble" and thus be connected to the Arabic name Sharifah. It is borne by a main character, a Moor noblewoman, in the Moorish novel The Abencerraje (1561), by anonymous author.
