Transferred use of the surname Kenyatta, meaning "a musician", according to Asante (1991). This was the surname of the first President of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta (1894-1978; born Kamau wa Ngengi), who is considered the founding father of the African country (see also Kenya). It has been adopted as a given name by the African American community.
