Not only David Koresh, but Cyrus Teed, a 19th-century 'physician' fascinated with alchemy who changed his name to "Koresh" when he had a vision telling him he was the Messiah. He started a commune following the belief that the earth is hollow, we live inside it, and the sun is a giant battery-powered operation in the center of it. Or something. Poor guy.It almost looks like a connection between delusions of grandeur and English-speakers choosing this non-English version of the name Cyrus. Sad because it doesn't have a bad sound, and Cyrus the Great (from the Old Testament) was a pretty nice guy, rebuilding the Jews' temple and furthering human rights in his empire.
This would sound ridiculous as a name in America due to the aforementioned David Koresh, who was pretty insane.
David Koresh, leader of the Branch Davidian religious group who died along with 74 followers in a fiery blaze at their church in Waco, Texas after a 51-day standoff with the FBI.
