Means "woman from Kythera", an epithet of the Greek goddess APHRODITE given because Kythera was the island to which she first arrived after rising from the foam of the sea (compare CYNTHIA, Delia). On Cythera, the worship of Aphrodite had been introduced by an early Phoenician colony. Allegedly Κυθήρη (Kythere) "the red one" had been an epithet of ASTARTE.
