The meaning "landowner" in Scottish is confirmed by its use as a distinguished title in Scotland. A "Laird" is a "Lord", as in a lord of a castle. Not only a landowner, but providing parcels to be worked by those under his care. I've heard it pronounced by a true Scot when I told him my name. The reply: Ahhh, a L-air-t!, with a very proud and distinguished tone. Lairds are highly thought of in Scotland. Consider the meaning and not the piggish childishness of comparing a word to a sound-a-like, which has no bearing on it's reality.
