Derived from the Greek noun λαός (laos) meaning "(the) people" combined with the Greek noun ἄνασσα (anassa) meaning "queen, lady".

This name was borne by a princess of Syracuse in Sicily, who lived in the 3rd century BC.

In Greek mythology, Lanassa was a great-granddaughter of Heracles.
