Meaning & History

Coined in the 1930s by Julius Mägiste, an Estonian linguist. He probably intended the name to refer to Lehola (also known as Lõhavere), the castle of Lembitu, an Estonian chieftain. Nowadays, however, the name is also associated with Estonian lehe, the genitive case of leht, "leaf".
