The first element of this name is either derived from Greek λεων (leon) meaning "lion" or from Attic Greek λεώς (leos) meaning "the people" (see Leos). The second element is derived from Greek φαντός (phantos) "visible", which is ultimately derived from the Greek verb φαντάζω (phantazo) meaning "to make visible". This was the name of a philosopher from ancient Greece, who was sometimes counted to be among the Seven Sages of Greece.
