Meaning & History

The first element of this name is either derived from the Lithuanian verb liautis meaning "to stop, to cease" or from the Lithuanian noun liaudis meaning "people, folk", which is etymologically related to the Germanic element leud meaning "people" (see Leopold and Leutwin). If the latter is the case, then this name is a variant form of Liaudgintas. The second element is derived from the Lithuanian verb ginti meaning "to defend, to protect".
