I Love this name for a girl or a boy. I disagree with the opinions that it's too short (there are other three letter names that aren't "too short"), or an old man's name...(I don't know any old men named Lou, and I work in the medical field and I know half the town). I don't think it needs to be short for anything, it stands well on its own. My daughter's middle is Lou (just Lou) and I call her this as a nickname name at times. People's faces often light up in delight when they hear her called this. It may not be popular here, but it is well liked in the real world.

Someone suggested Lou as a middle name, Mary Lou, Betty Lou, etc. I think the name Lou as a middle name is totally bogan. WT, a true trailer-denizen name. As are all variations of Lou, imho: Louanne (spelled any which way), LouDean (I knew one), the whole lot of them. Don't blame me, don't shoot the messenger. The only exception is Louise, and its nickname Lulu.

Lou isn't a bad name, I don't hate it, this name is okay. Mina_sakura, lol.

Lou works best as a middle name or nickname, I think. Like Mary Lou or Suzy Lou, or a shortened form of Louane as a nickname. I just can't picture it being someone's first name.

I LOVE the name Lou. Can you tell from my username? Lou sounds great with Annalise as a middle name. Very feminine and very elegant. I'm in love with it. My favorite character from Mr. Mercedes has the name Lou too! It's very up and coming, and close minded people can't see that.

This name has grown on me for both genders. I think it's really cute for a boy, and its kind of edgy but sweet for a girl. I was interested to find it was so popular in France for girls. I would love to meet a little girl (or boy) named Lou!

I don't like Lou on a boy, it makes me think of an old man. But on a girl, as a nickname for Louisa, it's so sweet. I really like masculine nick-names on girls, Lou is one of the best.

I don't know what Heidi Klum was thinking. Lou is dumb, especially as a legal name on a girl. It sounds too redneck and masculine to be a girls' name. It's also very old-fashioned. If you want to call your daughter Lou, just name her something like Louise, Lucy, or Luana and then call her Lou for short.

Since I am planning on naming my daughter Louise, I find Lou to be a very safe nickname and is easy to catch on to when your young, so I might introduce her as Lou in the future.

A nice name, but I would probably spell it Lu rather than Lou, partially because it comes from my favourite cartoon, 'Mike, Lu, & Og', and partially because Lou is short for Louis.

The thing about this name is that it's pronounced the same way as Loo, which is a British word for bathroom. I use the word Loo (despite not being British), and that's why I wouldn't use Lou as a name.

Lou seems to make a good middle name for girls, but I can't imagine it as a first name. It's too short-sounding.

I love the name Lou. But I'm searching for a full name for Lou. I like Lize-Lou, Louana, Lousanne, but they're not good enough. ;)

The fact "loo" means toilet matters, not one iota; and neither would it for anyone who possesses the quality of character that comes with discernment.
There exist plenty of names that within all languages will have one or more words that means something else, often either not a favourable meaning and/or pronunciation... And who cares, really.
If a name has a favourable meaning and/or sound within the language it's referenced, it doesn't take from the fact it's a great name within that or any language, it has good reason to be perceived as such, and that's all that truly matters.
Besides, any name that doesn't translate or sound as well within another language / country can take a different pronunciation. In England, for instance, strong Lou can be Loui(e), while sweet Lou can be Loua or Loui(e), etc.
In North America, John is a slang term for toilet and yet, not in any way whatsoever has it ceased to exist, nor change the fact it too is a great name, nor deterred any rational parents who want to, from using it.
