Cuneiform LÚ, (or lú as rendered in some texts) is found as a Sumerogram in the Epic of Gilgamesh (an Epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia). It also has a common usage in the 1350 BC Amarna letters as the Sumerogram for "man".Cuneiform was a writing system that was used to write several languages of the Ancient Near East from the early Bronze Age until the beginning of the Common Era. It is the earliest known writing system and was originally developed to write the Sumerian language of southern Mesopotamia (modern Iraq).
Although Lú is the Irish Gaelic variant spelling of Lugh, it makes a great unisex name. Though Lugh, is best suited / remained as a masculine name. Unless part of a double name, I don't care for Lu, but like it with the diacritic ú (or ù), as it seems more complete as a given name or short form.I'm quite fond of this succinct little two-letter name, and much like it as a transliteration for the classic Burmese unisex name လူ "person, human".Lù, with its low pitch grave accent seems better suited as a masculine name, while Lú, with its high pitch acute accent (and Irish masculine version of Lugh) is more unisex. Altogether, both Lù and Lú are among my top five favourite names.
Lú is also the Irish name of County Louth, Ireland, named after [[Lugh]].
