A very strange name indeed. But if you know how to pronounce it or if you were Dutch, I don't think it would be that much of a big deal. Anyways, I like it personally as a pronunciation.
In the Edmonton, CAN and Seattle, USA areas, emigrants from the Netherlands between 1926-1970 usually chose Marjorie (Margie) or Marcia, as an English name.
Maartje Paumen is a Dutch field hockey player, who plays as midfielder for Dutch club HC Den Bosch. She also plays for the Netherlands national team and she was part of the Dutch squad that became World Champion at the 2006 Women's Hockey World Cup and which won the 2007 Champions Trophy and the 2011 Champions Trophy.
A good friend of mine sometimes uses this as a pet form for her name Marit, I like it.
