Meaning & History

Derived from Greenlandic massippoq meaning "rising half up from a horizontal position" and the suffix -nnguaq "sweet, dear", with the implied meaning "flower which is raised up by the heat of the sun, whilst small pieces of ice are still above it" (according to the Greenlandic author Karl Siegstad).

Alternatively it could mean "sweet little healed one", from Mavsâraĸ combined with -nnguaq.
