Meaning & History
The first element of this name is either derived from Lithuanian mantus meaning "intelligent" (see Daumantas) or from Lithuanian manta meaning "property, estate" as well as "wealth, riches, fortune". The second element is derived from the Lithuanian noun girdas meaning "rumour", which is ultimately derived from the Lithuanian verb girdėti meaning "to hear". Also compare the related Lithuanian noun gandas meaning "rumour, hearsay".
