Flemish form of MARCOU, which has also seen some use in the Netherlands (mostly in the south, which is predominantly Catholic). Also compare the related French name MARCON.The use of this given name started out in honour of the 6th-century Frankish missionary and saint MARCULF, who is known in French as Marcou (among others) and through that as Marcoen in Dutch.
