Meaning & History

Meaning uncertain. At least two sources state that the name is derived from an Armenian placename. According to one of them, the place was called Mardara.

Other sources state that the name is derived from Μάρδοι (Mardoi), the Greek name for the ancient Iranian tribe of the Amardi (also Mardi). In turn, the tribe derived its name from an old Iranian word for "man" → compare Proto-Iranian *mártyah meaning "man, mortal".

This name was most notably borne by a 4th-century saint from Sebaste in Asia Minor (now Sivas in Turkey).
