This seems kinda unisex to me.

This is my first name and I am a French/Swiss American born in 1975. I didn’t like it too much as a shy young kid but grew to like it and receive a lot of compliments for it. I just say “thanks, I’ll tell my parents”.

The way it's spelled reminds me of mantis, like praying mantis.

Mathis was my maiden name, and I gave it to my son for a middle name. I really don't see it as a first name though.
