Meaning & History

Variant of Megiste, which is the main feminine form of Megistos. This was the name of the leader of the women's resistance against the tyrant Aristotimus of Elis (c. 270 BC). The Graeco-Roman scholar Plutarch wrote about her bravery in his essay Mulierum virtutes ("Virtues of Women"), which he included in his Moralia ("Morals").

In Greek mythology, Megisto is the name of a granddaughter of king Lycaon of Arcadia as well as an alternative name for his daughter Kallisto.
