Meaning & History

The first element of this name is derived from the Greek verb μενω (meno) meaning "to stay, to remain" as well as "to last, to withstand" (see Menelaus). The second element is derived from either the Greek noun φρόνις (phronis) meaning "prudence, wisdom" or the Greek verb φρονέω (phroneo) meaning "to think" as well as "to be minded". Both words are ultimately derived from the Greek noun φρήν (phren) meaning "midriff" as well as "mind, intellect, wits".

In Greek mythology, Menephron is the name of an Arcadian who has an incestuous relationship with his mother and his daughter.
