Derived from Hebrew mephitz "destroyer" and tophel "liar" (the second element taken from the phrase tophel shequer, literally "falsehood plasterer"). This is the name of the devil in the German Faust legend, with whom the character Faust makes a pact, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures.
