Old Polish masculine name, composed of Mieci- ("throw") and -sław ("fame"). Mieszko is most probably diminutive form of Miecisław. It was used by dukes from ruling family in Poland in Middle Ages. Sometimes Miecisław was shorten to Masław, which actually is a different name.
