Meaning & History

The first element of this name is derived from the Greek adjective μνήσιος (mnesios) meaning "of memory", which is ultimately derived from the Greek verb μνημονεύω (mnemoneuo) meaning "to call to mind, to remember, to think of", itself ultimately derived from the Greek verb μνάομαι (mnaomai) meaning "to remember, to be mindful of". Also compare the name Mneme, which literally means "memory, remembrance" in Greek.

Lastly, the second element of this name is derived from the Greek noun ἀρετή (arete) meaning "goodness, excellence" as well as "virtue, skill". As such, the meaning of this name is basically "commemorating virtue".

Mnesarete was the real name of Phryne.
