I love this name! I'm thinking of calling my future child Mona Belle (Belle being the middle name) and having Monny as a nickname, similar to Molly.

I am a Mona from China! Because it sounds like one of the characters in my Chinese name AND one of Ross's ex-girl friends is called Mona and she is pretty (just kidding). But I do like this name for two reasons: 1. I don't know anyone else with this name. 2. It only has two syllables so does not sound too dramatic. The biggest problem might be that whenever English speakers asked my name, I have to repeat it several times because they have never heard of it, lol.

It's a cute name but you should avoid it if you ever plan on moving to Italy. It's a slang word in Italian. In some regions it means 'fool/idiot' while in other regions it can have a really vulgar meaning (very vulgar word for the feminine body parts, similar to a word in English that starts with the letter C). Just something to be aware of. I personally think that outside of Italy it is lovely.

I actually think that this name is really cute and that it fits in with current naming trends. It falls into a similar category as Nora or Lena which are getting more common.

I love how gentle the name Mona sounds. Not my favorite name, but it sounds like the name of a beautiful teenage girl from the middle ages.

Born in Denmark in 1956. It took me 33 years, finally to get used to the name.

I'm told it could have been shortened from Pomona.

Pomona: (Latin) Fruit-girl - from "pomum" = Fruit (on Trees) She was originally an ancient Italian Goddess for the harvest of fruit - with her own FLAMEN (priest) and a kultplace just outside Rome. She was almost forgotten, until Ovid fabulated a love story about her and the God Vertumnus.

Perhaps the name could be a shortcut from Shakespeare's tragic female figure: Desdemona - in his play "Othello". Who knows?

I have, occasionally - with affection, been nicknamed: Monex - and also: Monette! A namesake is called: Monse - another changed her name to Monja. Hope this can be of use to others.

I am a Mona, born in 1973. Only 0.023% of girls born that year were named Mona. I love my name. I didn't like it much as a child, but as an adult I think it is a great name. It is uncommon, but not unheard of. I am usually the only "Mona" most people know, which is awesome. I'm very unlikely to meet someone who's had a bad experience with anyone named Mona. Whenever I hear "Mona", it's pretty safe to assume that someone is either talking to or about me. Because it is so rare, it is very versatile and fitting of the bearer. I mean, haven't you ever known anyone whose name just didn't match their image/personality? I once (in the late 1990's) knew a beautiful, statuesque, sophisticated, blonde bombshell named Bertha Earline. That name just didn't seem to fit her. The name Mona can be playful, cute, sophisticated, sensual, powerful, feminine, strong,.. anything the woman is, because it is so rare that most people don't have a mental image of what/who "Mona" is. My middle name is Leeann.

This name sucks in English. It sounds like a black person or a New York Jew pronouncing 'moaner'. I hope that doesn't sound racist, but isn't that how it goes in America?
slight night shiver  4/30/2008
Mona is a lovely name and it doesn't sound like "moaner". And yes, that was extremely racist.

Mona can also be a Manx name or word referring to the Isle of Man. Unlike this meaning, it is not an English version but comes from the oldest known name given to the island, Manu or Mana. Caesar actually referred to the island under this name - 'an island called Mona which lies midway across the sea separating Britain from Ireland.'
