Meaning & History

Latinized and Romanian form of Nikon. Saint Nicon is a martyred Roman soldier who was serving in the East when he was converted to Christianity. Eventually he became a monk. Gathering disciples to his side, he fled with them to Sicily to escape the persecutions under Emperor Trajanus Decius. On the island, he and his followers were arrested and executed.
