Roman cognomen which was derived from Latin novatus meaning "renewed, refreshed" as well as "altered, changed". A known bearer of this name was the Roman senator Lucius Junius Gallio Annaeanus. He was born around 5 BC as Lucius Annaeus Novatus to the Roman rhetorician Seneca the Elder and his wife Helvia.

Novatus was also the name of an early Christian saint from the 2nd century AD.
