Meaning & History

Derived from the Greek noun οἰνάνθη (oinanthe) meaning "inflorescence of the grapevine" as well as "vine" and "dropwort".

Its literal meaning is "vine flower", as it consists of the Greek noun οἴνη (oine) meaning "vine" and the Greek noun ἄνθος (anthos) meaning "flower, blossom". The former element is often confused with the Greek noun οἶνος (oinos) meaning "wine", which is understandable, since they both come from the same root.
