Oveta Culp Hobby (1905–1995) served as the first U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare (1953–1955). She was the first woman in the Army (colonel) to be awarded the Distinguished Service Medal; and the first woman asked to run for a presidential candidacy (for 1960) by an incumbent president (D.D.Eisenhower).
