Meaning & History

Derived from the Greek adjective ὀξύς (oxys) meaning "sharp, keen, pointed" as well as "quick, swift" combined with the Greek noun θέμις (themis) meaning "law of nature, divinely ordained justice, that which is laid down" (see Themis).

A notable bearer of this name was Oxythemis of Coroneia or Cleonae, an Olympic victor from 732 BC.
