Meaning & History

Meaning uncertain, but likely derived from the English word pert.

This is the name of a character from the novel Checkers: A Hard Luck Story (1896) written by the American author and playwright Henry Blossom (1866-1919). He later turned the novel into a play called Checkers (1903), which was successful on Broadway.

A notable bearer from real life is the American actress Pert Kelton (1907-1968). She was named after the character at the suggestion of her aunt, who had seen Blossom's play and loved it.
